Creating Prescriptions
Detailed guide for creating prescriptions
Overview
Scripter's prescription creation workflow guides you through all required fields while maintaining flexibility for complex cases. You'll enter patient details, client information, medications (using guided or freeform entry), and optional clinical notes. Prescriptions can be saved as drafts for later completion or marked as active for immediate PDF export.
Starting a New Prescription
Access the prescription form from:
- Dashboard: Click "New Prescription" button
- Prescriptions Page: Click "New Prescription" in the top right
- Keyboard: Press
Cmd+K(Mac) orCtrl+K(Windows) and search "new prescription"
Form Sections
1. Patient Information
Required fields marked with asterisk (*):
- First Name / Last Name: Pet's name (at least one required)
- Species* : Dog, Cat, etc.
- Age: Years and/or months (calculated from DOB if provided)
- Weight: In kilograms (recommended for dosage verification)
Optional but helpful:
- Date of Birth (auto-calculates age)
- Sex and Reproductive Status
- Breed
- Microchip number
Tip: Enter date of birth instead of age - the age will calculate automatically and stay current.
2. Client Information
Owner/client details:
- Name*: Client's full name
- Contact: Phone and/or email
- Address: Full postal address
3. Clinic Information
Auto-populated from your profile but can be overridden:
- Clinic name and address
- Contact details
- This information appears on prescription PDFs
4. Medications
Add one or more medications using:
Guided Entry
Best for standard medications:
Drug Name: Amoxicillin
Strength: 500mg
Form: Tablets
Quantity: 30 tablets
Directions: Give 1 tablet twice daily with food for 10 days
Repeats: 2Freeform Entry
For complex prescriptions:
Metoclopramide 10mg/ml oral solution
Give 0.5ml by mouth three times daily, 30 minutes before meals
Dispense: 50ml
No repeatsEach medication gets a unique ID for legal compliance:
- First medication: Uses prescription number (e.g.,
VRX123) - Additional medications: Prescription number + sequential number (e.g.,
VRX123-2,VRX123-3)
5. Clinical Information
Optional but recommended:
- Diagnosis: Brief description of condition
- Clinical Notes: Additional context, special instructions, or warnings
Saving Your Prescription
Save as Draft
- Work-in-progress state
- Can be edited anytime
- Not exportable to PDF
- Useful for prescriptions you'll complete later
Mark as Active
- Finalizes the prescription
- Enables PDF export
- Still editable if needed
- Ready for dispensing
Review all details before marking as active. While you can edit active prescriptions, changes are tracked for compliance.
Auto-Save
Scripter automatically saves your work:
- Saves every few seconds while typing
- Shows save indicator ("Saving..." → "Saved")
- Prevents data loss from browser crashes
- Draft prescriptions preserved until you're ready
