Creating Prescriptions

Detailed guide for creating prescriptions

Overview

Scripter's prescription creation workflow guides you through all required fields while maintaining flexibility for complex cases. You'll enter patient details, client information, medications (using guided or freeform entry), and optional clinical notes. Prescriptions can be saved as drafts for later completion or marked as active for immediate PDF export.

Starting a New Prescription

Access the prescription form from:

  • Dashboard: Click "New Prescription" button
  • Prescriptions Page: Click "New Prescription" in the top right
  • Keyboard: Press Cmd+K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows) and search "new prescription"

Form Sections

1. Patient Information

Required fields marked with asterisk (*):

  • First Name / Last Name: Pet's name (at least one required)
  • Species* : Dog, Cat, etc.
  • Age: Years and/or months (calculated from DOB if provided)
  • Weight: In kilograms (recommended for dosage verification)

Optional but helpful:

  • Date of Birth (auto-calculates age)
  • Sex and Reproductive Status
  • Breed
  • Microchip number

Tip: Enter date of birth instead of age - the age will calculate automatically and stay current.

2. Client Information

Owner/client details:

  • Name*: Client's full name
  • Contact: Phone and/or email
  • Address: Full postal address

3. Clinic Information

Auto-populated from your profile but can be overridden:

  • Clinic name and address
  • Contact details
  • This information appears on prescription PDFs

4. Medications

Add one or more medications using:

Guided Entry

Best for standard medications:

Drug Name: Amoxicillin
Strength: 500mg
Form: Tablets
Quantity: 30 tablets
Directions: Give 1 tablet twice daily with food for 10 days
Repeats: 2

Freeform Entry

For complex prescriptions:

Metoclopramide 10mg/ml oral solution
Give 0.5ml by mouth three times daily, 30 minutes before meals
Dispense: 50ml
No repeats

Each medication gets a unique ID for legal compliance:

  • First medication: Uses prescription number (e.g., VRX123)
  • Additional medications: Prescription number + sequential number (e.g., VRX123-2, VRX123-3)

5. Clinical Information

Optional but recommended:

  • Diagnosis: Brief description of condition
  • Clinical Notes: Additional context, special instructions, or warnings

Saving Your Prescription

Save as Draft

  • Work-in-progress state
  • Can be edited anytime
  • Not exportable to PDF
  • Useful for prescriptions you'll complete later

Mark as Active

  • Finalizes the prescription
  • Enables PDF export
  • Still editable if needed
  • Ready for dispensing

Review all details before marking as active. While you can edit active prescriptions, changes are tracked for compliance.
