Understanding prescription statuses helps you manage your workflow effectively:
| Status | Description | Color Badge | What You Can Do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Draft | Work in progress | 🟡 Yellow | Edit, save, delete, or mark as active |
| Active | Finalized prescription | 🟢 Green | Edit, export PDF, cancel |

Draft Prescriptions
Draft status is for prescriptions you're still working on:
- When to use: Incomplete information, pending client approval, or saving for later
- Auto-save: Changes are saved automatically as you type
- No PDF export: Must be marked active before exporting
- Can delete: Drafts can be permanently deleted if no longer needed
- No date assigned: Prescription date is set when marked as active
Resume Draft Feature: If you navigate away from a draft prescription, Scripter will prompt you to resume when you return to create a new prescription.
Active Prescriptions
Active status means the prescription is finalized and ready for dispensing:
- Prescription date set: Date is automatically set when you mark as active
- PDF export enabled: Generate professional PDF for pharmacy
- Still editable: Can make corrections if needed (changes are tracked)
- Cannot delete: Must cancel instead to maintain audit trail
- Unique IDs locked: Medication numbers are finalized
Cancelled Prescriptions
Cancelled prescriptions are retained for record-keeping:
- Read-only: Cannot be edited or reactivated
- Audit trail: Maintains complete history of who cancelled and when
- Record retention: Kept for compliance (NSW: 2+ years required)
- Still searchable: Appears in search results and filters

Editing Tips
When to Edit vs. Create New
Edit an existing prescription when:
- Fixing a typo before the prescription is dispensed
- Updating client contact information
- Correcting medication dosage before issuing
- Still in draft status
Create a new prescription when:
- Client needs a different medication
- Previous prescription has been dispensed
- Changing treatment significantly
- Original prescription was already provided to client

- Update address fields
- Click Save
- Client details update for this prescription only (doesn't change your client database)
Fixing Medication Directions
- Scroll to Medications section
- Click on the medication entry to expand
- Edit the Directions field
- Auto-save captures changes
Changing Clinic Details for One Prescription
- Click "Edit" next to Clinic Information
- Modify fields as needed (doesn't update your profile)
- Use when issuing from a different location temporarily
Best Practices
Keep your prescription list organized for efficient workflow and compliance.
Prescription Workflow
- Complete prescriptions promptly: Don't leave too many drafts pending
- Mark as active when ready: Only finalize when you're confident about the treatment
- Export immediately: Generate PDF as soon as you mark a prescription active
- Cancel outdated prescriptions: Don't leave old active prescriptions that won't be filled
Organization Tips
- Use consistent naming: Use the pet's full name as recorded in your practice management system
- Delete test drafts: Clear out test or practice prescriptions regularly
- Review drafts weekly: Complete or delete pending drafts to avoid clutter
- Search by prescription number: Reference unique IDs when communicating with pharmacies
Compliance and Record-Keeping
- Never delete active prescriptions: Always use Cancel to maintain audit trail
- Document cancellations: Note in clinical records why a prescription was cancelled
- Keep records for 2+ years: NSW requirement (Scripter retains indefinitely)
- Review rejected prescriptions: If a pharmacy queries a prescription, review and correct
Quick Tips
- Keyboard navigation: Use arrow keys in tables
- Bulk selection: Coming soon in Phase 2
- Prescription templates: Planned for future release
- Export history: View in account activity log
