Creating Your First Prescription

Step-by-step guide to creating your first prescription in Scripter

This guide walks you through creating your first prescription in Scripter.

You must be verified before you can create prescriptions. See the verification guide if you haven't completed this step.

Have this information ready:

  • Patient details (pet name, species, age, weight)
  • Owner details (name, contact, address)
  • Medication information (drug name, strength, quantity, directions)
  • Diagnosis or clinical notes (optional but recommended)

Creating a Prescription

Start a New Prescription

  1. From the dashboard, click New Prescription

Fill in Patient Information

All fields with asterisks (*) are required.

  1. Patient Name: The pet's name (e.g., "Buddy")
  2. Species: Dog, Cat, Bird, etc.

Your clinic details auto-populate from your profile. You can override them if needed:

  • Contact details
  • This information appears on the PDF export

Add Medications

Scripter supports two medication entry methods:

Guided Entry (Recommended)

For structured medication entries:

  1. Click Add Guided Medication
  2. Fill in:
    • Drug name (e.g., "Amoxicillin")
    • Strength (e.g., "500mg")
    • Form (e.g., "Tablets")
    • Quantity (e.g., "30 tablets")
    • Directions (e.g., "Give 1 tablet twice daily with food")
    • Repeats (number of refills allowed)
  3. Click Save

Freeform Entry

For complex or unusual prescriptions:

  1. Click Add Freeform Medication
  2. Enter all medication details in the text field
  3. Useful for compounded medications or special instructions

You can mix guided and freeform medications in the same prescription.

Add Clinical Notes

  1. Diagnosis: Brief description of the condition
  2. Clinical Notes: Additional context or special instructions

This information helps pharmacists and other veterinarians understand the prescription context.

Save Your Prescription

You have two options:

Save as Draft

  • Saves your work without finalizing
  • You can edit anytime
  • Cannot be exported to PDF
  • Useful for prescriptions you'll complete later

Mark as Active

  • Finalizes the prescription
  • Can be exported to PDF
  • Can still be edited if needed
  • Prescription is ready for dispensing

Tips for Better Prescriptions

Pro Tip: Use guided entry for standard medications and freeform for complex cases. This keeps your prescriptions consistent and professional.

  • Be specific: Include strength, form, and clear directions
  • Use standard abbreviations: PO (by mouth), BID (twice daily), etc.
  • Include weight: Helps with dosage verification
  • Add clinical notes: Provides context for pharmacists and future reference
  • Double-check: Review all details before marking as active
